I was a big fan of Sid Wadell as darts was breaking through on our TV screens in the early 1980s and was saddened to hear of his demise this year There are few commentators that define their sport in the way he did Murray Walker maybe and his enthusiasm for the sport had a lot to do with it s rise to prominenceI have a morbid fascination with the game of darts I can t play it well and there is something surreal about watching huge men playing what is essentially a pub game and elevating it to a sport The level that it is played at these days is incomprehensibly better than when it first hit the TV screens in the 80s and it s no doubt a sport However in it s heyday when drinking and smoking were allowed on stage there was a frisson that is somehow missing nowSo it was with interest that I found out Sid had written this book and unfortunately I found it disappointing on a number of frontsFirstly the structure of the book is unsatisfactory in my opinion It wavers between a chronological account of the games rise fall and rise again and mini bios of some of the stars but not all As a result it seems disjointed to me suddenly we have a whole chapter devoted to Jocky Wilson from his rise to his decline he was still alive when the book was written and it doesn t work in my opinionSecondly Waddell can t resist turning it into an autobiography of himself I think he believed the hype about his role in the development of darts and whilst he clearly had a lot to do with it we don t need to be told constantly what that role was Part of his charm is his brash arrogant approach and it works as a commentator as an author it grates hugely I don t want to keep hearing about his accolades as a commentator and how he consumed vast amounts of booze with the players the number of hangovers he had etc It s just not that interesting It also leads to the third pointWaddell was too close to the stars to be objective I don t want to hear Bristow referred to freuently as Brissy for example It is hard to write objectively about your mates and I think this maybe the books biggest flaw Sure Bristow was great and I loved watching him and he was great value as the arrogant world number 1 but he could be a pain as well That side is never explored and one gets the impression Waddell is actually fawning over these guys at times Clearly he admires their drinking prowess and that s fine but it is repetitive in the book and there is no real attempt at balance in my viewUltimately this seems like a book that SW wanted to write for himself and not for the reader It is too self flattering in my view and fails to shed any real light on the development of the game Even when the PDC split from the BDO there is little real examination of this it is clear SW is on the side of the PDC and as an author I would rather have seen a objective account It s not really a true story of darts it s an autobio of SW masuerading as a serious look at this game That s a shame there are enough characters and enough intrigue in the game to make better reading than this An objective look at where Wadell fit in the darts firmament would add great perspective Ultimately Wadell was too close to the action too inclined to miss the wood for the trees for this to be a great book Missed Opportunity

Dear oh dear oh dear This was a disaster of a bookIt introduces itself as part history of darts on TV and part autobiography of its author Sid Waddell it was neither All it contained was countless depictions of the games he commentated on never ending mentions and sucking up to of the top players of the time and many many references to how dysfunctional or drunk the players were as if it was a good thing that they behaved that way Grammatically it was very annoying to read also there were a lot of missing commas and there was no structure of any sort to speak of Things meandered this way and that yet it still felt like I d read it before given how repetitive the book is to begin with The chapters were way too long especially as they pretty much repeated themselves from Chapter 2 onwardsAll in all it read like the local drunk guy s stream of consciousness a lot of bigging himself up a lot of opinion and not a lot of factsWarning rant aheadThe final straw for me was on page 147 when he had the gall to say on live television that the ladies darts games were I uote like watching paint dry and that s when I put the book down It became clear to me then that this Sid Waddell guy is no lover of darts as a sport he just wants it to be an old boys club where he can talk all the crap he wants and get away with it in the name of boys being boys As a professional commentator he should be championing all sides of the game not just those he cosies up with and even if he didn t like ladies darts he should know better than to let his opinions override his professionalism Aside from that it seemed to me that Sid Waddell was just very lucky and was in the right place at the right time because going by what I ve read here he didn t seem to actually contribute a lot to darts in general he just shoehorned himself in wherever he could just so he could say he was there Needless to say I m not a fan of him and this book was a disgrace to the sport and to use his own words reading it was like watching paint dry

If like me you are of a certain age and remember the early days of televised darts and the characters that have graced the world darting stage then I am sure you will find this a very interesting read Although it covers most of the world championships the book is not so much a history of darts but a biography of Sid himselfThere are fascinating stories about many of the legends of the game Jocky Brissy and Taylor in particular Sid was in the fortunate position of getting to know the characters and was a good friend to many of themA few reviews have suggested that Sid was guilty of blowing his own trumpet This maybe so however no one can deny that his true passion for the game of darts dart players and theatre that this created shone through with every commentary For me although he references many of the uniue and often bizarre lines that he used in commentary he will be best remembered for his undeniable love of the game This is what set him apart from all other sporting commentators

Sid Widdell is a legend among commentators Brilliant potty and hugely entertaining That comes across in this book To be honest if it hadn't been written by Sid I wouldn't have bothered with a book about the history of darts I watch a bit on the television and I've even been to a live match and met the great Sid himself but I'm not that bothered about the statistics That said this was a fascinating insight into the development of darts fr
